Unfortunately, in my personal opinion, I'd have to put One Piece above Bleach when it comes to fights in the series, which is amazing because One Piece is primarily an adventure shōnen. It also helps that Luffy's gang of friends have more defined arcs of their own compared to Ichigo's. Basically, One Piece fights benefits from a protagonist with a proactive goal. Its why the Ichigo vs Byakuya fight was well recieved. Ichigo had this trait during the SS, but they either just reuse it or give him nothing for us to latch onto. Luffy's goal of becoming Pirate King gives us a reason to see him succeed and not just because he's the main character. On the emotional narrative, I definitely give One Piece, and it all comes down to the protagonists. With Bleach its the usual, Ichigo just beats the guy real hard or his hollow helps him. I think Bleach and One Piece do comparable jobs at accomplishing the technical narrative of battle, but I give the edge to One Piece just on the matter that Oda comes up with interesting twist to help resolve them, like Luffy absorbing shadows, using drugs, and taking advantage of devil fruit weaknesses, alas Pokemon style. Emotional narrative gives the fight more purpose outside of A beating B. Technical narrative gives the fight a more dynamic and additional elements outside of the straight brawl. īasic gist, there's a technical and emotional narrative. This video does a great job of dissecting what makes a fight scene interesting.
